Young Gun to Watch Sunday!

If you are going to tune in to the 500 this weekend, keep an eye out for the #21 Cream and Crimson Pioneer car driven by Jeff Simmons. This was one of the best stories of May.

So who is Jeff Simmons? Jeff is the only 2 time Barber Dodge Pro Series Champion. Scored 3 podium finishes in Indy Lights and was the runner-up to Mark Taylor last year in the IRL's Infinity Pro Series.

This year, Jeff is running the Infiniti Pro Series for AJ Foyt's team. During the Rookie Orientation Program at Indy in late April AJ let Jeff run one of his cars to pass the Rookie test. Last Saturday Jeff led 5 laps and finished second in the Freedom 100 IPS race at Indy. Mo Nunn, owner of the Pioneer #12 car driven by Tora Takagi called Jeff right after that race and asked him to hop in Tora's backup car on Saturday afternoon. Jeff proceeded to run 20 laps on Saturday and got within a mile an hour of Tora's fastest lap of the month in the same car. On Sunday Jeff ran 30 laps in the morning practice and ran faster than Tora ran all month. Jeff proceded to qualify in the middle of row 10 a half mile faster than Tora and slower than only 1999 IRL Champion Greg Ray and 1996 Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier.

Jeff Simmons Bio

The sad thing is that no writer has yet to put together a piece on Jeff Simmons and what he did this weekend. I guess the simple answer is that doing a piece on Jeff Simmons would require some research and why would any journalist want to actually do work when they can write the same tired negative pieces in 15 minutes and get back to the free buffet line.

Jeff was the great story of Sunday... yet no one wrote about it... sad.

And if you don't tune in or go to the race, your loss! And that makes you a loser! ;-)
