Central Michigan is a mediocre MAC team... but who cares... IU kicked their butt tonight.
IU 41 - CMU 10
Defense delivers in IU's opening win - Indy Star
Mark this down... Tracy Porter is going to be a stud in the NFL. As a true freshman, #36 started at Corner tonight and picked off 2 passes and returned one of them 97 yds for a TD. The kid has speed, hands and played perfect position defense while going one on one in pressure defense. CMU tried to pick on him and he responded time after time with deflections and the picks.
The defense was much improved with the starters limiting CMU to 3 pts in 3 quarters despite 2 fumbles by IU's offense setting CMU up in the red zone both times. Depth makes a difference as the D-Line was platooning every other series and they were fresh in the 2nd half.
Outside of Adam Braucher duck hooking his first PAT, the special teams unit performed well. Bryan Robertson increased his leg strength over the offseason and repeatedly kicked the ball through the endzones during kickoffs with no wind.
If CMU is on ESPN at any time this year, be sure to watch the game. Keep an eye on Jerry Seymour, #1, their sophomore tailback. The dude is all of 4' 11" and is like a mouse out there. He hides behind blockers and you can't see the guy... he was incredible.
And kudos to the person who came up with the walk up buy one ticket get one free promotion. There was a great crowd there tonight and they announced 6,000 walk up sales. Great to see the stadium 3/4ths full. In a few years... it will be packed with bandwagon jumpers.
One side note on pregame warmups... I found it very interesting to see the Defensive Backs running routes with the Wide Receivers and Running Backs during warmup drills. Excellent idea... nothing hurts more than seeing a DB with perfect position to make an interception only to drop the ball. I want IU's DBs with good hands. It helped tonight.
