IU's Youth - Reality or Excuse?

So much has been made of how young this IU team is. So is it valid, or is it simply an excuse?

During yesterday's game with Connecticut, I kept hearing Clark Kellogg and Spero Dedes commenting about how young IU was. It seems that everyone has heard Davis talk about it so much that they all are just believing it as fact. So I pulled out my trusty Excel and crunched some numbers from yesterday's game to see just how young IU is compared to the #6 Defending Champion UCONN Huskies.

# of Players
IU Freshman - 2
IU Sophomores - 2
IU Juniors - 3
IU Seniors - 2
UCONN Freshman - 2
UCONN Sophomores - 4
UCONN Juniors - 4
UCONN Seniors - 0

So IU played 9 players, 5 upper classmen and 4 underclassmen.
UCONN on the other hand played 10 players 4 upperclassmen and 6 underclassmen. Oh and UCONN has ZERO seniors.

Total Minutes
IU underclassmen - 75 minutes
IU upperclassmen - 125 minutes
UCONN underclassmen - 122 minutes
UCONN upperclassmen - 78 minutes

In minutes, UCONN is younger than IU.

Total Points
IU underclassmen - 23
IU upperclassmen - 46
UCONN underclassmen - 42
UCONN upperclassmen - 32

In Points UCONN is younger than IU.

Total Rebounds
IU underclassmen - 12
IU upperclassmen - 20
UCONN underclassmen - 31
UCONN upperclassmen - 17

In Rebounds UCONN is younger than IU.

I do not want to hear Youth mentioned at all with this game. Same thing with Strength of Schedule... It wasn't like IU went and played a senior laden UCONN team, now they played a team that lost 3 key components of last year's team and is playing with a bunch of underclassmen replacement. And IU fell apart down the stretch when Bracey, Strickland and Tapak should have lead them... that's 2 Juniors and a Senior.

Steve-

I love your site, but I think some age notations should be made. Aside from Marshall and Bracey, no other member of the current rotation has a dramatic amount of game experience.

DJ and Vaden were only playing in their fourth college game. Tapak never even saw the court until the Notre Dame game last season. PE2 fouled out after five minutes nearly every game last season. Sean Kline has yet to play a full season and is still recovering from a serious knee injury. Mike Roberts, while a fifth year senior, can hardly be considered a seasoned veteran. He has served throughout his career as a practice body. Donald Perry is finally back from suspension, but we will not see him for a while.
