"I'm not making excuses because Notre Dame did play well, but it's just so tough to get up and play at this level this early in the season every single game," IU coach Mike Davis said.
What? Didn't these kids come to IU to play basketball? How can you not get up against an in-state rival on ESPN. And if they can't get up for that, it's the coaches job to get them up.
"This was a disappointing loss . . . because of the way we came out and played. We had no energy. We had open shots and we just missed open shots."
There you go... the obligatory missed shots and no energy excuses. Couldn't have been the game plan or the "Davis Offense."
"When you go back and watch the tape, how many open shots did we miss?" Davis said. "Just wide-open shots. You can't draw up anything to get a guy a wide-open shot if he's going to miss."
Blame the players... not the coach. Brilliant!
"Our schedule has been tough every year I've been here, but unfortunately the last two years we haven't had the experience to get through certain situations," Davis said. "You see Kentucky play North Carolina (Saturday) and then come back and play Morehead (State). That would have been great for us to do. Now, you win by 25, you win by 30, and you get a chance to let guys play and develop."
Here we go again... that pesky schedule and lack of experience. Hey Mike, this is year #5... all of these players are your recruits... if you are lacking experience, it is because of your recruiting! Oh and if Morehead had been in Assembly Hall last night, we would not have beaten them by 25 pts... in fact, we probably wouldn't have beaten them at all.
And finally, I found this tidbit very interesting. Bracey and Mike don't seem to be on the same page...
Zoned out
Davis insisted after the game that his team was ready for Notre Dame's zone defense.
He said the Irish used it Saturday against Michigan, and the Hoosiers had studied the tape carefully. But IU junior guard Bracey Wright said the Hoosiers had only one play to run against the Irish zone.
"That's all we ran all night," Wright said. "When it didn't work, we were stuck."
One play? Are you kidding me? Hmmmm... now that is strong coaching!
