A First at IU!

The IU Spring Football game tonight drew 6,521 fans Friday night... more than the 5,113 that witnessed IU Basketball's last home game.

Crimson defeats Cream 34-6 - IU Athletics

Congrats Brand, Herbert and Greenspan. You succeeded in increasing the visibility of the football program at the expense of the basketball program.

Never thought I would say that I look forward to the Football season at IU. Go Football Hoosiers!

What's the deal? I thought that Steve was in Carmel. Isn't that a nice neighborhood of Indy? Whenever I go to the 500 Speedway looks run down. Do they have nice houses tucked away somewhere in Speedway?

I live in a van down by the river!

You've probably only been North or East of the Speedway. Old Town Speedway is full of very nice older homes. And I own one of them.

Um, who would marry a guy who lives in a van down by the river? Oh yeah: Mrs. Matt Foley!

As for IU football, I'm glad that they're putting a few carrots in place to lure the students back. The IDS reported that IU lowered student football ticket prices to $8. I think that's a good thing. They've also been doing a huge media blitz (IU Athletics' solution to everything these days), which features posters of Hoeppner in an Uncle Sam pose, saying "I want YOU to support IU Football." Decent idea, but winning some games would work better as publicity.

On the other hand, athletics is using a big stick (the athletics fee) to go along with those carrots. Every time the administration talks about the fee, it sounds like they're blaming the students for the athletics deficit, because they choose not to attend the football games (and now basketball, too).

Well, boo hoo. Let's not forget that there wouldn't be a $1/million per year deficit if certain legendary coaches were still here. Let's also not forget that football is still a money-maker. Granted, it should be making a lot more money (if they're going to keep 87 billion football scholarships, the least they can do is win some games to justify the support given the program). However, I think they're taking the right steps to bring the program back.

Good to hear Anna. I really like the Hoeppner hire. I just wish the Prez, AD and Varsity Club Prez would make it easier to support them. I'll be posting my letters and responses this weekend.
