Davis Speaks

A Dayton Ohio reporter got ahold of Davis to get his thoughts on Thad Matta's recruiting...

Matta works on top class - Dayton Daily News

An excerpt...

But perhaps the most favorable development for OSU was the increasing instability at traditional power Indiana.

Beleaguered coach Mike Davis, who has gone 29-29 over the last two years, watched not only Oden and Conley leave the state, but also lost out on the top three graduating seniors in Josh McRoberts (Duke), Dominic James (Marquette) and Mr. Basketball Luke Zeller (Notre Dame).

Davis blamed the mass exodus on his lack of job security.

"It's been that way for five years," he said. "Kids want to be in a situation where they know the guy is going to be there for a long time. My situation hasn't been that way."

But Davis said he knows OSU would pose a challenge even in the best of times.

"I've said it for a while--it's the best job in our league because of the facilities and the resources you have," Davis said.

"It's big time. It's not like [Oden and Conley] went to Alabama A&M. They chose a great program."

"It's been that way for five years..."

Hmmm... what part of that contract extension in 2002 didn't you understand Mike? Your situation was pretty stable then... unfortunately the last 2 years have proven why players wouldn't want to come to IU... and it has nothing to do with your contract... your coaching ability on the other hand has everything to do with it.

"it's the best job in our league because of the facilities and resources..."

Really... I thought you yourself said IU was the best job in the league. Oh that's right, it used to be, but it isn't any longer. Look in the mirror and you will see why.

But that's okay Mike, I expected you to come out and blame your recruiting failures on your lack of a 30 year contract. Keep posturing and I'm sure IU will reward you handsomely during this season.

(sorry posted this under the wrong post)
I don't see why this is/should be an issue. It seems to me that EVERY College coach has to win. The sword is hanging (or should be) over all of them.

For davis to bit@h about this just shows that he is unable to realize that he is out of his league - it is sad that he is taking down a wonderful program with him.
