IU athletics reveals plan to end deficit - Indystar.com
Let's see, we've pissed off the alumni, so now lets piss off the students. Brilliant!!!
Plus they are taking away 500 of the good student seats and giving them to alumni... I'm sure at an inflated price. Isn't IU Basketball part of the whole College experience? Students already love those balcony seats. Now take away their floor seats and more will say screw you.
Paying for Soccer, Volleyball and Wrestling??? Funny, when I was there 15 years ago, we had to pay to attend Soccer and Volleyball.
And don't forget why the donations to a key athletic fund have topped $11.5 million. Because of a one time donation of $11 million dollars from a donor. I guess when all other donations are way down, you have to hang your hat on something.
Sorry students... doesn't look like your University cares about you either. Sad!

IU students would lose 500 of their best seats at Assembly Hall to donors, pay $4 more each basketball game and start paying to watch volleyball, soccer and wrestling matches, events that are now free.First IU doubles the price of Non-Student tickets in a 5 year period. Now they are looking to raise student tickets by $4 a person. $4 x 14 = $68 more a season. I have a feeling a few students will say screw you and student attendence will drop.
In exchange, a $30 annual fee imposed to help offset athletic department costs would disappear from students' university bills next fall. The fee, now in its second year, generates more than $1 million a year.

Department officials, whose $1.6 million deficit stems in part from higher costs, lower game-day attendance and payouts to former administrators, hope to break even by the 2007-08 school year and run roughly a half-million dollars in the black two years later.Wait a second. Didn't Terry Hutchens just tell us that basketball attendance wasn't down? I'm really confused now. Or else Terry made up some numbers to try to convince us all was rosy in B'Town. Hmmm... I think I know which statement is true.
IU has seen some bright spots lately. The deficit has been shrinking, football season ticket sales are up 34 percent from last year, and football revenue on pace to meet its $4.3 million target. Also, donations to a key athletic fund have topped $11.5 million for an all-time annual record, IU officials said.Hmmm... look what a new coach was able to do for the Football program. I wonder what a new coach would have done for the Basketball program. Probably increased interest enough that they wouldn't have to do something so stupid as take away good seats from the students.

Steve,
I congratulate you! The candle making marketers have found your site. I am jealous.
Up to this point My blog has only been graced by those dealing in Russian, Ukranian and Belorussian brides.
From my perspective the undergraduates always get screwed. For the most part Althetic programs, grad school programs are paid for off the backs off the undergrads.
When I graduated from Johns Hopkins in December of 1989 I was told there was no ceremony and that my diploma would be sent to my parents address in June of 1990 when the "official" graduation took place.
I was overseas at the time and wondered why my degree never showed up in Ohio. A few years later I happened to be in Baltimore and with the help of a few people in the admissions office found my diploma in the back of a utility closet with a huge "Return to Sender" stamped across the tube.
Indeed they had attempted to send it to my home address as "6291 South Brinker Avenue". Oddly enough, my home address was 291 South Brinker Avenue where my parents still lived.
For four and a half years they had never made that mistake when it came to sending tuition bills and report cards, yet somehow my diploma had missed the mark.
I have often thought of how much time, money and energy went into getting that degree and yet not one person in the JHU admin could take the time correct the "6291 Brinker Ave" into "291 Brinker Ave"
Needless to say I have not donated one penny to that institution.
Bottom line: From what I know colleges don't give a damn about their undergraduates as long as they foot the bill.
That is sad! With the time, money and energy spent, I'm glad you were able to get that diploma.
You are right Colleges see undergrads as an income stream and wealthy alumni as a cash cow. They don't care about anyone else.
Steve, with all this fussing about IU, you've not said one word about the Colts (who are going to the Super Bowl) or the Pacers (who will be eliminated in the Eastern conference semi-finals).
Get Blue, Steve!
The Colts have been doing everything right... nothing to criticize there. Where's the fun in that?
I'll be watching at noon!
GO COLTS!!!
Oh, I can tell you lots of other ways that I wish IU acted like it cared about its students. (At least many of the staff & faculty try to counteract it.)
I have to admit, if the Athletics Department needs more money, perhaps it IS fairer to charge those who go to games, rather than assess fees to everybody. If we had a really kick ass team, the students who were really interested would absorb the ticket price increase. And I doubt that attendance at soccer & volleyball games would drop if there was a small ticket price attached. (And what the HELL are we doing not charging to see a world-class soccer team, anyway??) This is all assuming that we fix the money hole in the department RIGHT NOW - which I doubt will happen anytime soon, but we can dream.
That being said, taking away more student seats is exactly the opposite way to go. If we want to re-build a basketball culture at IU, we need to start with the students. After all, the students will be alumni soon, and they will fill those alumni seats if they have good experiences while they're here. But if you don't impress the students, you've just lost alumni attendance (and donor $$$) for the next 50 years.
That's what all these short-sighted Davis fans don't understand. Just like you said, Steve, it's not about the W/L record - it's about keeping a tradition alive that will sustain the program for a long time. And Davis not only stomps all over our tradition, but he's a bad imitation of the things he strives to be. Sad, really sad.
Preach On Anna! Well Said!
