Hmmmm... I need some help here from my more Politically savvy readers.
Bush picks Roberts to succeed Rehnquist - news.yahoo.com
Does this seem odd to anyone else? Shouldn't one serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court before becoming the Chief Justice. William Rehnquist was appointed to the Court by Nixon in 1971, and served 15 years before being named Chief in 1986.
What about John Paul Stevens, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, David Souter, Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer? Do none of them deserve the promotion? I would think that Scalia and Thomas would have been the 2 expecting the promotion from a Republican President. How will they treat the newbie?
I'm guessing there is a political reason for this move? Bush's handlers aren't stupid... there is something here. Just curious as to what it is, since the media hasn't realized this is a question that the public might be interested in.

Chief Justices hang out for SUCH a long time. I can see why Bush nominated Roberts for the post. Roberts is young AND political Teflon.
On the other hand, Ginsburg and Stevens are the complete opposite of Bush politically, and they are also older than dirt. They were off the list from the beginning.
I personally can't tell Kennedy, Souter, and Breyer apart unless they wear nametags. And I went to law school. And I listened in class.
As for Thomas - yeah, right. Not in Long Dong Silver's lifetime.
The only other one who could possibly have made it would have been Scalia. He's hilarious, but he's out of his frickin' mind. The man doesn't even believe in a right to privacy, among other things (including Miranda rights, I think). Not only that, but there's the whole duck-hunting-with-Cheney-even-though-he-was-a-current-litigant problem that Scalia had last year. No can do.
I've always heard that the Supreme Court Justices were great friends despite their differences - at least until 2000 and Bush v. Gore. I wonder how they'll treat the new manager. I know what happens in most workplaces when the new guy is promoted over the veterans...
Thanks Rachel and Anna!
At 50, Roberts is going to be leading this Court for a LONG time.
