IU - Iowa Post Game

Random Thoughts on tonight's game...

First off DK sets the over under at 16 for an IU loss tonight. I'm going under but still a loss.

What kind of message are you sending to your team when you say the following? "I'm just hoping for a split." Not much unless Davis is looking for a Banana Split.

Tough news regarding Marshall Strickland's knee. Not much information on what happened and Erin wasn't able to update anything during the game. I hope Marshall is back soon.

I like the Marco... Polo... Marco... Polo chant.

IU played a good last 4 minutes of the half... they took advantage of Iowa's bad shots and cut the lead to 3 at the half by pushing the ball and driving for easy buckets and some free throws.

Interesting words from Davis at the half. "I want our guards taking more shots." After going 4-11 in the first half from the 3 pt line.

What does IU do coming out from the half? Proceed to chuck bad 3 after bad 3 and Iowa turns an 11-0 run into a 14 pt lead and then extended it to 17 pts. That my friends is GOOD Coaching.

Interesting that Davis tried to send a message to Marco by sitting him after IU's awful start. What does IU do without Marco? They go on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 8.

How much does IU pay Lavin and Musberger to due Davis' PR?

What is a Pepper Pot? Lavin used that term 30 times. And Musberger repeated it another 20 times.

Glad to see the Pride of the Program Long Island U. spot tonight focused on Claire Bee. Over the 10 seasons he coached, his winning percentage was .826... the top winning percentage of college coaches of all time.

Will IU ever score on a play coming out of a time out?

IU came into the game ranked 2nd in the country in field goal percentage at 52%. What in the world is wrong with College Basketball if 52% is at the top? Poor shot selection, undisciplined basketball has trickled down from the NBA.

What in the world??? Davis calls his last time out at the 6 minute mark to argue over a touch foul. After arguing all 30 seconds, Davis continues after the time out and gets a T. Nice.

Watching Davis complain about every call was pretty sad. Not quite as sad as watching the Peegs.com board melt down over the officiating though. People... as long as IU runs a 4 out, 1 in offense that focuses on shooting 3s... they are not going to draw any fouls. And as long as IU plays 4 guards, they are going to be outsized on the defensive end and will have to resort to fouling.

Coach Lav gave Mike Davis his Coach of the Year award... ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

Nice 3 pt barrage from IU at the end... but note to team... when fouling a player away from the ball... don't choose Iowa's best FT shooter. AWARENESS!!!!

Vaden went nuts for 26 pts 8-12 from 3pt range. If not for his late 3s, DK would have had the right margin.

Eric Hansen had a career high 11 pts and 6 blocked shots. Sound familiar?

What in the world is with Students rushing the court????

IU followed Davis' instructions to shoot more outside shots in the second half. 13-30 3pt shots for the game... 9-19 in the 2nd half.

Post game interview... why does Mike not thank God when they lose? And why is the standard response always a variation on the Missed shots observation? Tonight's comments: "We missed shots. We missed 6 layups. We could have won this game easily if we just made shots." "Robert Vaden has to carry us going forward." "Iowa played well. They made shots." "I'm disappointed. We are ranked 11th in the country. I'm disappointed."

Hey Mike, we are all disappointed too... but not in missing shots.

Iowa 73 - IU 60

Yeah, but the fact is, they missed shots :) Other than Vaden, the team shot 14 of 45 (31%) and hit one of six free throws. Remarkable.

Lavin and Mussberger had the Marco love fest going on as well. I lost count at the number of times Lavin would say something to the effect of, "I think Coach Davis sent Marco a message, but this is Big Ten basketball and you need your best players on the court." This was during IU's 11-2 run with Marco on the bench. If I recall, Davis sat Marco because he wasn't passing out of double-teams. When he finally gets back in the game, he passes out of a double-team and IU got a three on the play. Great. Fast forward to the final few minutes and Marco stopped passing and tried forcing his way through double-teams, leaving wide-open shooters. Marco has talent, but it's becoming he doesn't have much basketball smarts.

I'm not sure if Marco has any smarts at all. During the post-game, Erin asks Alford how they kept Marco to 10 pts. Umm, he played only 25 minutes. That might have had something to do with it.
