Steve Alford the next IU Coach?

Over the next 2 weeks... or until Greenspan announces a hire, I'll throw out a name as a potential coaching replacement for Davis. Let me know what you think?

Steve Alford Bio - hawkeyesports.com

AJ would be okay with Alford per his quotes after the Gonzaga game - Ratliff would like Alford - Indystar.com

I think Alford would be a great hire. You watch his teams play and they play smart, disciplined basketball. And I think he WILL be able to recruit Indiana kids to come to IU. What Indiana kids want to go to Iowa? Ratliff didn't.

No.

No because I think there are better choices. But if they do go with Steve I will support him and IU.

As for the "Alford will be great recruiting in Indiana" I don't buy that theory (and it is only a theory) but I also fear that ANY new coach IU hires will struggle initially to recruit in-state because the previous staff (at least one of them) has poisoned the well, so to speak, with a lot of in-state high school coaches. Those fences may take ANYBODY, whether it's Alford, Gillispie, or someone else, a year or two to mend.

I hate to say it but I have to agree with Mike. I think there are a lot better coaches out there. It will not be an easy road for any coach and it will probably take a few years to rebuild the program.

IU needs to take a good look at UNC. When Dean left they hired their assistant coach just like IU did. Then they hired their ex-basketball star just like Indiana would do if they hired Alford. They finally got smart and paid the big bucks and got an established coach. I think Indiana needs to skip a step and go right for a big name coach. Lets face it this is America. Everybody is available for a price.

Damn Greg! 2 for 2 on that post my friend! Your comparison to UNC could be spot on. Though I do think Alford would fare better than Doughboy.

I didn't think anyone would get the Tracy Chapman lyrics. Everyone missed the Doors lyrics earlier. I'll buy you a Beer at the Outlaws in April.

Alford is not the man.

“Under Davis, the Hoosiers have gone 55-41 in the Big Ten, with one losing record in six seasons. Alford is 52-60 in seven years with the Hawkeyes, with two winning seasons.”

“Iowa failed to make the NCAA tournament in four of his first six seasons as coach.”

“Not everybody in Hoosier Nation agrees, of course. The organizer of www.HireSteveAlford.com said in an e-mail about 40 percent of the respondents to his Web site wish Indiana would pursue other candidates. Interestingly, 30 percent of their sales of Alford-to-IU T-shirts have been to customers in Iowa.

Despite winning 22 games this year and going 132-91 over seven seasons, Alford always will have detractors in Iowa City for his handling of the Pierre Pierce sexual-assault situation and for not winning enough games in the Big Ten (52-60) or NCAA tournament (1-2).”

“In seven seasons as Iowa coach, Alford's best finish in the Big Ten Conference is a tie for second this year.”

Less than impressive…2 out of 7 winning seasons at IU and Alford won’t be around for long.

Alford IS the man for the job He was literally born for it.
