On a day where Shinnecock Hills proved to be a brutal course in the final round, 2 players handled the course and made brilliant putt after putt down the stretch. The average round was a 79... but Goosen and Mickelson both shot 71s... no one backed into this victory.
Retief Goosen had 12 one putt greens in the final round. That kept him even with Phil Mickelson as he was making 3 birdies in 4 holes from 13 to 16. The difference was Mickelson's 3 putt double bogey on 17. The thing I really enjoyed down the stretch was that both players were smiling and interacting with the crowd. It led to a buzz in the crowd all day long.
This was very similar to Smarty Jones going for the triple crown... the crowd was behind Phil from the start and was deflated after #17.
Final Leaderboard
