Mitch Daniels and Daylight Savings Time

In his first Q&A with the Indy Star, Mitch touches on Daylight Savings Time:

Q: You've backed adopting daylight-saving time. How much of your political capital will you be willing to spend this legislative session to accomplish that?

A: I plan to do whatever I can to pass an economic development recovery plan for our state. This is one piece of it, so I plan to work hard for it.

Q: Will we be aligned with Chicago or New York?

A: This is the swamp of all swamps. The smart answer is I'm not going to talk about it. You know, seriously, this is one piece, not an unimportant piece, of an economic package I'm going to work very, very hard to see through. . . .

Many Hoosiers think it's just about clocks. They don't know it costs some of their neighbors jobs. Hoosiers are caring people. As more of them know that, this will seem the really small issue that it truly is.

What a load of crap. DST does not play into any economic development decisions. I have a degree in Economic Development from Indiana University and worked for the Indiana Economic Development Council for 4 years out of school. I personally interviewed and spoke with business and government leaders throughout the state along with leaders from other states and DST never was an issue. The Inventory Tax and other taxes, the Brain Drain and lack of technical workers, and Indiana's lack of incentives compared to our neighboring states were issues.

DST and absolute BS... plain and simple. Indiana, Arizona and Hawaii have it right. I have yet to hear a valid reason for twice a year moving your clocks one hour. What does that do? The sun still comes up and goes down.

Preach on, Steve! Daniels is willing to put his ass on the line for an issue like DST? Can he not think of one issue - just one - that is more important? (Cue Church Lady, "Hmmm...can it be...HEALTH CARE? EDUCATION?") On top of it, Daniels has no specifics beyond that he wants us to adopt DST. I guess he can't put his ass on the line enough to pick a g&*d@#$ time zone, probably because half of DST supporters would want Central, and half would want Eastern, and there goes his Coalition of the Willing.

Bob has always claimed that DST does affect Hoosier businesses, based on his experience at a call center. But really, all they needed there was flex time (allow employees to open the phones at 7 for the East coast in summer, and let those employees go home early). Companies who do frequent national or international business are constantly dealing with time zone issues anyway. (ever try to figure out what time it is in Japan, India, or China, anyone? Do THEY have DST?)

It would be absolutely CRIMINAL for the sun to set at 4:00 in the winter. And it would also suck to wait until 10pm for 4th of July fireworks. Geographically, staying on standard time makes sense for Indiana - and MI, KY, and TN, might I add. They're the ones who need to step up.

I hate it as well when pro-DSTers say crap like Indiana has "too many" time zones due to the Chicago and Cincy metro areas in Indiana. If Hoosiers are supposed to be smart enough to run an emerging biotech industry, methinks they can ALSO figure out county line boundaries.

Bottom line - better school funding, more progressive attitudes, decent cultural and athletic attractions, non-sucky media outlets, and a damn Starbucks on every corner will make upscale businesses more likely to stay here than DST ever will.

The residents of Indiana, including whatever percentage are average wage earners working 8 to 5 o'clock, had....repeat...had a blessing bestowed on them some 30+ years ago...We observed Daylight Savings Time...and we were at the western edge of a time zone...in this case...Eastern (or New York) time zone.

The winter times and sunlight were just as it is now...but the summer months, when you can use some of your 24 hours per day of living for something, provided that extra hour of daylight in the evening for something other than working for the "Master"....What a gift we could give ourselves to have that extra time after work to recreate?...spend money?...enjoy life?...entice more people to stay here for the lifestyle, not the workstyle?

I worked and lived through the week in Lexington Kentucky for several years recently. They observe DST and are in the Eastern time zone. I could leave work at 4:30 to 5:00, drive to a local fishing site, and fish until 9:30 to 10:00 in the evenings...I thoroughly enjoy this because I work to live, not live to work...THINK ABOUT IT!!! Do not go to Central time and DO observe Daylight Savings Time.
