Indiana DST - Thanks Mitch!

Okay so let me get this straight. Mitch wants us to buy into switching to DST, then switching to Central once he gets the Feds involved to change our time zone.

So what that means is this... in the Winter, as we are in CST, the sun will be going down around 4pm. That sure will be nice driving home from work in the dark for 4 months. Then come spring, we will move our clocks forward, so we have the same amount of daylight we have today.

Call me slow... but I don't see how this is a good thing for me. Thanks Mitch!

not sure if we will be moving over to Central. I think that the golfers are going to want that extra hour of daylight. I read somewhere that the story about Ben Franklin "inventing" DST is BS. I heard it was really created by golfers.

As a golfer, I must say that the only positive of DST and EDT for Indiana... I can play 18 after work.

Outside of that... DST is crap!

I grew up on Central DST in southern Indiana and spent another 6 years on it in Kansas City. I've actually spent more time in the central time zone than on Indiana time. I've got to say that my preference would to be on central time year round. It's entirely just one person's opinion here, but I like it.

The #1 reason for my opinion is TV related. When you're on central time, prime time is between 7-10 and not 8-11.(This is assuming the local stations wouldn't actually run delayed like they do half of the year currently.) I know this sounds like a pretty lame arguement, but again I said this is just one man's opinion.

Reason #2 for me is simplicity. I get tired of working with people for six months who are on the same time zone as I am, and then six months with the same people on a different time zone. Compounded by the fact that I work with people in the same state as I am, and they are on a different time zone depending upon where they're at in the state.

Just a little disclaimer- I do not intend for this to be taken as an endorsement for Mitch. I just like CDT.

Mike... you Mitch lover you... ;-)

TV??? That is lame... about as Lame as me wanting EDT so I can play some extra golf in the summer.

Your Reason #2 is really why we should be on DST of some sort. Consistency is the real only argument. Had Mitch come out with that being his reason behind it, I probably wouldn't have cared too much. But the whole Economic Development reason is pure Hooey.

Mike and Mitch, sittin' in a tree, K-I-S-S...ew, yuck!! ;)

Sorry Mike - TV, as worthy an institution as it may be, isn't sufficient enough to make up for this DST crap. Although I love seeing The Daily show at 10pm, I usually fall asleep to it anyway, so even DST doesn't help me.

I still don't understand how DST saves energy. If the sun comes up early, we will turn on more lights at night. If it comes up late, we will turn on more lights in the morning. Apparently there are studies that DST saves energy, but I don't know how.

No, Steve is right that about the only argument for DST is consistency. I've heard enough people (aka Bob) say that Hoosiers look like a bunch of stupid hicks for not buying into the rest of the country's DST thing.

BUT...first off, there's a whole LOT of things that Indiana would have to do to lose the hick image. Try funding education, or having a non-hick or non-right wing news source at least SOMEWHERE in the state. Changing to DST isn't going to make us get with the times. Lowering the teen pregnancy rate - THAT would be a step in the right direction. (See: Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma...)

Second: geographically, Indiana should probably be carved into two time zones like Kentucky. But South Bend, Kokomo, and Indy make that impossible. That's why choosing a time zone is such a tough call, and one of the reasons why I supported leaving DST alone - because no time zone really adequately works for Indiana.

However, the big point is that I don't even think consistency is a strong enough argument for DST. We work in a global society and we've dealt very well with time zone issues (including working with entire countries that don't observe DST) ever since there have been time zones. Go on, ask me what time it is in Japan. I have no clue. But if I had to call someone there, I could easily look up the local time, thanks to The Internets. (I'd have to figure out dialing directions anyway.)

For call centers and other businesses that serve callers throughout the US, just get a portion of the staff to come in at 7am in the summer. They'd be glad to do it so that they could leave early and play 18 holes.

Besides, you can't tell me that half the people in NYC could even locate Indiana on a map, much less know its time zone by heart. They probably wouldn't be that surprised to know that we're not in sync with them for half the year.

For the record, ince DST is a done deal, if we don't at least go on Eastern time, I'll definitely be pissed. Sufficient daylight is a HUGE thing to me in the winter, and if it gets dark at 4pm, I will begin to resemble Nicholson in The Shining.

Wow Anna... how do you really feel? Glad to see I'm not the only one psycho about this.

Better stock up on the grow lights... we will be on CST next year... count on it :-(
