Student Athletic Fee

Hmmmm... the controversial one time $30 student athletic fee that raised an estimated $1.1 Million last year to help bail out the IU Athletics Department doesn't seem to be a one time fee. According to this Indy Star article, Herbert and Greenspan plan on keeping it next year.

Undergrads would pay $7,161; plan also includes the extension of controversial $30 athletic fee.

Guess they need the money to help pay Davis' $300,000 bonus and $100,000 raise to $900,000 next year.

But I thought donations were up? Basketball attendance was up? Everything was rosie again?

Guess not!

This is yet another reason why people don't take student government seriously. IUSA was all over this issue very loudly, and the student advisory board voted flat-out against it. But the trustees kept their heads up their butts, as always.

Poor babies in athletics - can't stay within a budget! If my department went $1 million over-budget, we'd have to present someone's head on a platter - and we're an academic department, which I thought was the main mission of the university. not only that, but athletics has been producing fewer and fewer results each year - not just wins and losses in football and b-ball, but in graduation rates for student athletes and ticket revenues, too.

A big point about this is that most students get nothing in return for the fee. I've heard about some scholarships and stuff, but not much else. The university could have done much better - for instance, giving a discount on the football tickets that aren't selling anyway. Instead, they'll probably just use the money to bring in another consultant to make up a new logo or something.

Mark my words, this fee will never go away.
