More on DST...

This opinion piece is why I simply have a blog and Matthew Tully has a job in Journalism. A great read!

Even now, Daniels is in the dark on time zones
- Indy Star

Matthew nailed the subject with this one statement:

Daniels created this monster. He clearly understands the need to modernize and simplify Indiana's time system. But he has shrugged off the human side of the storm like a CEO making a bottom-line decision, arguing it must become easier for Indiana firms to deal with clients in places like New York or Europe.

That argument makes great sense. But most people have more basic concerns, like: "What time will the sun go down on July Fourth?" Or "Will I be driving to work in the dark in April?"

Daniels missed the point.

A quote from Daniels while on the campaign trail last year:

"We can start with small things," he said. "For Pete's sake, let's get all of our state on the same time."

What I find interesting and Matthew didn't touch on this in his piece, is that Daniels wanted to get the whole state on the same time. Yet that isn't happening as counties in "The Region" will be on Central to match Chicago. And Evansville will also be on Central. Last I checked, that isn't all of our state on the same time.

And we wonder why people in The Region feel like they're not a part of Indiana. I hear that from Bob all the time. Indianapolis gets all the amenities - new roads, new sports facilities - and The Region looks like a nuclear bomb exploded. Not only that, but Indiana is always depicted as a rural state. Tell that to the third of the population that lives in the Gary area. They can't see a farm because the buses don't run that far.

I'm sure those in The Region would want to be on Chicago time - it's the only thing that would make sense. But to discount them as a part of this state is one item in the list of everything that's wrong with Mitch.

By the way - that commenter was spot on with why we're all freaking out over this DST thing. I WILL be driving to work in the dark in April, and I WILL miss 4th of July fireworks because I'm not freakin' staying up that late.

WHAT an idiot of a governor. Thanks, all you green-shirt people! Hope you're happy now!
