This is pure conjecture... but stick with me here.
Jason Giambi wins the AL MVP in 2000 with the A's hitting .333 with 43 homers & 137 RBIs. He follows that up with anther great year in 2001, .342, 38, 120 for A's. Giambi takes that performance and signs with the Yankees for $120 million. In his first year with the Yanks in 2002, he hits .314, 41 & 122. Then Jose Canseco threatens to write a book and he specifically mentions how he shot up with McGuire and Giambi in Oakland. Then the SF Chronicle breaks the story of BALCO. While Bonds and Sheffield claim they knew nothing, Giambi came clean and admitted to Steroid use. Now in the public eye, he has to stay off the juice. But without it, his body starts to fall apart with mystery ailments, torn Hammys and all the signs of a body no longer on roids. In '04, he botttoms out with a .208 average, 12 HRs & 40 RBIs in 80 games. MLB comes out with a new testing policy and Giambi is forced to stay clean. Another bad year in 2005 and he will be out of baseball. Sure enough, April and May pass by and Giambi is hitting under .200. The Yankees try sending him to AAA Columbus, but he won't go. Word also comes out that Giambi had been tested in May under the MLB testing program and he is clean.
This is where I am throwing out something I don't know, nor could I prove... but it's my blog and it makes me wonder...
The MLB steroid policy was written such that a player could only be tested once per season. Giambi was tested in May. Hmmmm... if he knows he can't be tested again this year, why wouldn't he get back on the Juice? He can't be tested. And if he doesn't, he won't even be in baseball next year to be tested then. So I'm guessing Giambi started back on the roids. In June, Jason started hitting again. And miraculously, he looked as if he had gained 15 pounds. Then came July where he hit 14 HRs and .386. So far in the first 5 days of August he has 4 HRs and is hitting .474.
His season numbers are up to 21 HRs and .291.
Just pointing out something that makes you go Hmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on MLB... do away with the once a year test! Keep testing monthly. Anything less that that and your policy is a joke that will only catch those dummies taking over the counter supplements without thinking. It won't catch the true users that get tested early and jump right back on the cream and the clear.
