Soccer... America's Pastime... NOT!

I'm glad to see all the wasted hours spent at soccer practice and games over the last 15 years has really paid off. That was a strong performance at the World Cup by an overrated team of Americans that choked... big time.

Placing the blame - espn.com

I'll be happy to place the blame... it falls directly at the poor hurt foot of every player who drops to the ground in excruciating pain at any contact to try to draw a foul from an official who is 40 yards away, then immediately jumps up and runs at a full sprint until the next time. Where is the honor in faking an injury just to get a call?

Note to parents all over the US. Drop the soccer charade. That means you Greg!

Steve,

I will agree that soccer will never be America’s pastime. Baseball, Apple pie and Chevrolet will never be replaced with futbol, fried ice cream and Honda. But you have to agree that soccer is the sport of the world. Would I rather my kids play good old American sports? Heck yes. I will push them that way as much as possible. But I will also support any kid that chooses to play soccer so hopefully one day the U.S. can have a team that they can be proud of instead of a joke like what was in Germany this past year.

oh yes

American sports are great!

nothing like sitting through 20 minutes of bud lite, chevy and priceline ads to watch the last 60 seconds of a game run off the clock due to incessant time-outs.

at least we don't have that with soccer.

NBA basketball: teamwork defined.

NCAA basketball: We all know those players graduate with degrees and 3+ GPAs. I'm so happy those scholarships are put to use in the classroom.

also let's not forget all those great American athletes. OJ Simpson, TO, Rodman, Canseco, Bonds, Pete Rose. Such great role models every last one

and the insufferable commentary from the booth "gives 110%", "this is a great sports town","it's do or die"

Yep, American sports rule!

Sadly Greg, fried ice cream and Honda have already replaced apple pie and Chevy.

Anonymous, you pick out a few bad issues with American Sports but don't give me any reason why I should get excited about Soccer.

Should I be excited about the largest scandal in Italian soccer history in 2006, involving allegations of match-fixing, illegal betting and manipulation of referee assignments?

Or the 2005 German scandal where 5 referees were convicted of rigging games and bringing in $3.18 million in US equivalent dollars?

Or the scandals in South America where players and referees families have been kidnapped to assist in fixing games.

Yep that gets me excited about soccer.

Steve: Nice job of researching! I appreciate the new information. Thanks!

Soccer is a great sport for young children up to high school age to participate in. If the parents would stay home and let the coaches coach, it would be better for all involved.

It still does not change my mine of soccer at the "professional level". I'm excited too!

Steve,

I can respect that you do not like soccer. Two years ago I felt the same. But don’t give me this BS about not getting excited about it because of people throwing matches. That happens in every professional sport there is.

TS,

I would agree with you 100%. It would be great if the parents would stay away and leave the coaching to the coaches. Unfortunately there is a very high demand for volunteer youth soccer coaches and a very sort list of qualified candidates, which leaves it to the parents to fill the void. I do agree that it is not a good thing but more of a necessary evil.

Yes we do know the NBA is rigged. WWE is sadly just entertainment... bring back Dick the Bruiser. MLB had its black sox scandal. The NHL has to be rigged for a Carolina team to beat a Canadian team. Do they even have ice in Carolina? NASCAR gives their popular drivers special engines... how else can you explain Lil' E ever getting a win? ChampCar... the only American driver gets fired for a lack of performance over 2 years, but mysteriously gets picked up by another team that hasn't won all year but wins his first 2 races... yeah right.

Thanks Greg! I feel much better about the Colts loss to the Steelers last year. The only way they lose that game is if they threw it. Why didn't I think of that?

I really don't dislike Soccer. I went to IU... home of the best Soccer program in the country. I just dislike the US team CHOKING every year. And I have no problem with all the kids playing soccer today. We have become such a lazy society... anything to get kids active is a good thing.
