Terry Hutchens Q&A

A question from Terry Hutchens' latest Hoosiers Q&A at IndyStar.com

Question: Mike Davis must and shall go. The only questions are will it be before next season and who will IU hire to replace him? I am actually hoping Davis will be offered a job elsewhere. He'd be a fool not to take it. That whole argument about payroll and previous coaches is meaningless. IU needs to find (A) A young guy, under 35, (B) Someone with a Big Ten history as a player, and (C) someone who is not a former IU player. I'm sorry but coaches the caliber of Bob Knight and Coach K are few and far between. None of Knight's former players are all that good. The AD better have been looking for the best young talented coach out there. IU used to be the most feared program in the Big Ten and one of the top five in the country. Fans and alumni won't settle for anything less. (Kirk in Fort Pierce, Fla.)

Answer: You can hope all you want but I just don't see it happening at this point. Whether you believe Davis should be gone or are part of the group that supports him, I think he has survived for another season. And here's my question for you: Who do you think is going to offer Mike Davis a job right now? If there are this many questions just within the IU Nation regarding coach Davis, why do you think some school is going to jump at this point in Davis's career to hire him as the coach? I guess I just don't understand, if you believe he should definitely be gone, why you think someone is going to rush to offer him a job? I think next season is a big year for the Hoosiers and it's obviously the biggest year for Davis. I think some people fear that if the Hoosiers were to fare really well that it would mean that Davis would be at IU for the final two years of his contract. I'm not so sure. I think if he did really well, it might be his ticket out of Bloomington. I'm not saying he's looking for that ticket out, but if he is, I would certainly not think that the way IU has played the last two seasons is going to attract a lot of interest from the kind of program where he would like to go.
As for your coaching criteria for the next coach, I just think IU would need to hire the best man for the job. And even if Indiana has slipped considerably in terms of perception on the national stage, I still think there would be a long line of quality candidates that would be considered if and when that job opens up.

Where do I start with this one? I find it interesting that Davis' biggest supporter just slammed him. I quote "Who do you think is going to offer Mike Davis a job right now?" Hmmm... if Davis is deserving of a $300,000 bonus and a $100,000 raise at a school like Indiana University, wouldn't other schools be drooling over him?

How about this quote "I would certainly not think that the way IU has played the last two seasons is going to attract a lot of interest from the kind of program where he would like to go." Hmmmm... but it is good enough to give him a $300,000 bonus and a $100,000 raise... yeah... IU's decision makes a whole lotta sense.
