This article is from 2002, but I just stumbled across it last night. A pretty fair summary if you ask me.

They were willing to tolerate his faults—which they recognized, sometimes deplored, and often perversely enjoyed—because they took such joy in his virtues."As an IU fan growing up with Bob Knight, I was spoiled. The last 5 years really brought it home. IU BBall will never be the same and it's about time I realize that. No need to keep donating money and wasting my time on something that will never be what it once was.
