Mike Davis' 100 Wins and the Media

So last night the TV announcers made a HUGE Deal about Mike Davis getting to 100 Wins faster than any coach in IU history except coach Knight. At 100-68 I questioned that, but was too tired last night to research it. Well guess what... as usual, the IU Media dept molded the statistics to say what they wanted them to say. Davis was 2nd in getting to 100 in # of seasons only, not # of games. Obviously over the past 20 years, the NCAA has teams playing more and more games every season as Coach Knight got to 100 wins in 5 seasons with 20 losses. That's 48 games faster than Davis, but only 1 season.

So here are the real numbers:

1) Robert Montgomery Knight 100-20
2) Branch McCracken 100-25
3) Everett Dean 100-48
4) Mike Davis 100-68

Oh and by the way, those are the only coaches in IU History to get to 100 wins. So in reality, Davis was the slowest IU coach in History to get to 100 wins.

Here is what was in the IU Media Guide for last night's game:

Hoosiers Return To Hardwood Against Eastern Michigan - IUHoosiers.com
Approaching The Century Mark
Entering his sixth season as head coach at Indiana, Mike Davis has an overall record of 99-68 (.593) - just one win shy of reaching the 100-win plateau. When he reaches the milestone, he will become the second-fastest coach in school history to reach the century mark in wins at Indiana. Bob Knight won his 100th game as a head coach during his fifth season as a head coach (1975-76), while Branch McCracken obtained win number 100 with a victory in his first game of his seventh season (1947-48).
And here is what really matters... what the media says:

Freshman Powers Hoosiers - Indystar.com
The victory was No. 100 in Davis' six-year IU career, making him the second-fastest in school history to win 100 games. Bob Knight won his 100th game during his fifth season, and Branch McCracken won No. 100 in the first game of his seventh season.

Davis becomes member of IU 100-victory club - Fortwayne.com

The win was the 100th in the head coaching career of Mike Davis, who came into this season with a 96-67 five-year record. He is only the fourth coach to win 100 or more games at IU, trailing only Bob Knight (661), Branch McCracken (364) and Everett Dean (162).

“It really feels good,” Davis said. “I wish it would’ve happened last year. It would’ve been a lot nicer if it happened in five years.”

Nice quote there Davis... why would it have been nicer if it happened in 5 years? Because you could have claimed that you got to 100 as fast as coach Knight? That is exactly why Davis will never be a top flight coach. One who is that focused on records, stats, wins, etc... doesn't spend enough time focusing on the path to get there. Focus on the path, and the rest will take care of itself.

I noticed the new Google stuff on your site. How did that happen?

By the way, what do you think about the Super Bowl being held in Detroit this season?

I use Google search all the time and am at my blog all the time so I might as well add the search box. As for the ad... I'm curious as to the targeting and want to see what kinds of ads come up with the topics I blog about.

I think having the SuperBowl in Detroit is outstanding for the Colts. Playing in a dome with Field Turf for all 3 playoff games is a MAJOR advantage. Now if I could just get my hands on some tickets ;-)

The Colts should have an advantage...of course we are looking past a few games that need to be played to get there.

You don't get anything from Google for allowing the ads do you? Gosh, I wonder when Google will hit $1,000.

Steve, great catch on the victories. That's a nice piece of research. Well done.

That is so true. IU shouldn't allow Davis to talk any more. The more he speaks, the more we learn about him. He's in this for personal glory and it seems nothing more. He does a great job connecting with the kids (they seem to love him), but Davis should be no more than assistant. He can't handle being a head coach.

Years ago, before Steve started working in publishing, he was a data hound for the Indiana Economic Development Council. He shows with this bit of work that he still has a bit of data savvy in him.
